Liverpool’s title race this season has been one to watch from a neutral perspective as it has been based on defensive solidity. The Reds have been able to improve significantly by shoring up at the back and have kept five clean sheets in a row.

Goalkeeper Alisson has made a major impact in the side, signed in the summer after the disastrous showing of Karius in the Champions League final. Alisson has been the epitome of calmness in the backline for the reds.

Blessed with good reflexes the goalkeeper has also been able to initiate attacks due to his excellent ball passing ability.

Virgil Van Dirk is regarded as the best defender in the Premier League by many due to his staring performances since moving from Southampton last season. The most expensive defender in the World has justified the huge outlay with  man of the match performances this season.

He is one of the favourites to lift the PFA player of the season award and Liverpool’s title challenge would rest largely on his leadership qualities during this final run of games.

Andrew Robertson is one player whose improvement has surprised many in the league. Signed from Hull City two seasons ago the Scotland captain has become one of the key players in the team. Blessed with good stamina the 24-year-old is always available to provide the extra man on the left side when attacking.  He is also a superb defender capable of pocketing some of the best wingers in the Premier League.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the revelation of the last 12 months, an academy player from the club his rise has been monumental. In the recent 5-0 demolition of Watford, the 20-year-old provided three assists in the game. His attributes have earned him high praises from some of the legendary right-backs in the game.

Brazil legend Cafu is of the belief that Alexander-Arnold can develop into a world-class defender in the nearest future. While Glen Johnson has also reserved praise for the 20 year old full-back.

If Liverpool wins the League come May the backline would be the most important piece in the triumph.
